Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic and public speech writer. She founded Feminist Frequency, a web site that features videos and comments analyzing the portrayals of females in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, journalist and award-winning feminist for more than a decade. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which examines female representations in popular culture narratives. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her organization. However, Sarkeesian also seeks to bring attention to issues such as the targeting and bullying of women on the internet. Sarkeesian who has an MA in Social and Political thought with a degree from York University, is also well-known as a sought-after public speaker. She has given speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. From an early age, Sarkeesian was fascinated by issues of gender identity and feminist ideas. While still at school in 2009, she launched the Feminist Frequency web site. Someone who was ambitious planned to create a web-series that would examine the gender roles in video games. Then, she found herself as the victim of a cyber-bullying campaign. It didn't deter her from pursuing the project, and instead reinforced her resolve as feminists who criticize media. She has won numerous awards in recognition of her many important contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award awarded media critic, and founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization exploring the role of women in pop-culture and the narratives that surround them.
